Dos and Donts of choosing a domain name

October 23, 2020by hooterbux-venture

We all have a home where we live in, an address which is presented on our legal documents. This address is a proof of our belonging to a certain place. It defines us, gives us an identity, shows the world what we are and where we belong. Similarly, domain name is your address on the Internet. It is rightly said that domain names and websites are the internet real estates. It is through your domain name that people find you, know about you and get familiarized to the products you sell and services you provide. A domain name is your brand identity. It is crucial for your search rankings and is therefore something that you must put some thought in. It builds your brand value over time and accelerates your success. As Frank Schilling says, “A better domain name will lower your lifetime marketing costs.” Therefore, being a web development company and a digital marketing company, we think that choosing the right domain name for your brand is of utmost importance and value.

In this blog, we have shared some dos and donts which will help you in choosing the right domain name. Read on to know more!

Dos for the perfect domain name

A domain name extension is the most important aspect of a domain name according to us, here at Hooterbux. There are numerous amounts of extensions available to choose from. Earlier, each extension served a specific purpose and indicated the function of the website. However, this system no longer stands valid. There are over 300 domain extensions to choose from, some of the widely known being – .com, .in, .net, .org, .edu, etc. Domain extension is not the area to be creative with. In our experience, always go for ‘.com’ domain extension. Dot com is the most established and credible domain name extension. In addition to this, most smartphones have an automated .com button in their keyboards. This function can either win you or lose you customers. For instance, if your domain name extension is ‘XYZ.net’ and if a potential customer searches ‘XYZ.com’ because of the automated button on his/her smartphone, he/she will land on your competitors website. This will not work in your favour. Being an extremely well established extension, people tend to search the product or service they are looking for along with ‘.com’ in Google. Use this to your benefit.

Domain name is the area where you can show a little creativity. However, we cannot stress enough on the word ‘little’ in the previous statement. A domain name should be short, preferably under 15 characters. It must be memorable, easy to spell and easy to pronounce. Most importantly, it must be such that it furthers the cause of brand purpose, establishing a firm brand identity. Many times, people share their experiences of a particular website verbally. On such occasions, the website name is only remembered if it’s short, easy and memorable. To give an example, ‘bookmyshow.com’ is a good domain name as it clearly reflects the services it provides, it is just 10 characters, it is memorable and easy to spell and pronounce. Additionally, it is helpful to choose a brandable name. To elucidate on this, brandable name is a name which carries no specific meaning, but is still unique. While choosing this name, you must be careful that it must not be too wordy or complex and must sound trustworthy. For instance, our domain name ‘Hooterbux’ doesn’t mean anything, nor is it too complex, making it a brandable domain name.

Donts to avoid mediocre domain names

A domain name must not be difficult and phonetically and linguistically complicated. Avoid double letters in your name, to give an example – ‘shopppping.com’. It’s difficult to remember the number of p’s in the spelling, which increases the chances of losing traffic to typos. Even if your site provides excellent service, it is useless if you lose customers to typos. Avoid incorporating numbers into your domain names unless it is absolutely necessary. Use them only if your brand name consists of numbers (for example – forever21.in). Avoid hyphens in your domain name. Hyphens are often viewed as a sign of spam, and are yet again prone to typos. If you add a hyphen to your domain name just because the domain you initially wanted is already taken, your potential customers will likely end up on your competitor’s website.

Domain names and extensions can come off to be a tricky business. You can always employ a web page design and web development company to help you with it. We, at Hooterbux Venture, provide end to end website design and development services. We can guide you to choose the right domain name and set up your website. However, you can always resort to domain name generators to help with the name choosing. Domain name generators are free tools which search for your defined and desired keywords to find domain name ideas. Some well-known domain name generators are – Nameboy, Lean Domain Search, Instant Domain Search, etc. If you want to register a domain name without purchasing hosting, you should go for Domain Registrars like GoDaddy, Domain, etc.

To conclude, choosing the right domain name for your company is indeed a long process, but not a difficult one. To help you with the process, you can always hire the services of any web development company to make things easier and faster for you. However, if you decide to take matters in your own hands, the guidelines presented in this blog will definitely relieve you of some doubts and stress!
